42nd Street
The 1933 musical with Ruby Keeler as Peggy Sawyer who makes a fast career on 42nd Street. Lloyd Bacon and Busby Berkeley are the directors.
The movie takes place backstages where the tired director Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) is hired to direct a new show with the musical star Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels). It's going to be the new hit-show on Broadway, but the rehearsals are filled with trouble.
Julian Marsh seems to be near a break-down each minute, but keeps directing the exhausted background dancers. Some of them are the friends Lorraine Fleming (Una Merkel) and Annie Lowell (Ginger Rogers). When the star of the show, Dorothy, threats to quit. Unfortunatly, she hurts her ankle the night before the premier in Philadelphia.
Annie tells Julian to replace Dorothy with Peggy, who're all new in musical shows. Just before the opening, Peggy needs to learn everything so that there can be a premier, but will she succeed? This is a pretty good movie. It's really good quality and really great musical numbers. I'm not so fond of Ruby Keeler in her first real part, but exept for her, it's a great movie. I really like the way they shot some of the numbers. When they put the camera in the ceiling, and shoot the dancing girls from above. Nice.
