Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz stars in this classical adventure story with living mummys. 1999. Director: Stephen Sommers.
A long, long time ago in Egypt, the priest Imhotep (Arnold Volsoo) is cursed and buried alive with flesh-eating bugs. The reason for this torture is because he had an affair with the pharao's mistress Anck-Su-Namun. She killed herself, so that Imhotep could bring her back to life in Hamunaptra, the city of the dead. But the pharao's men found him and buried him alive.

Later, much later, in the 1920's, a military man, Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) comes to Hamunaptra and sees horrible things. Some time later, he's in prison and is going to be hanged. The librarian Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and her odd brother Jonathan (John Hannah) comes to Rick. Jonathan stole a mysteious key from Rick, and Evelyn wants to find out about it.
Rick says that he knows the way to Hamunaptra, which is the place that Evelyn and Jonathan is hoping to find. Evelyn saves Rick from being killed in hanging, and then he takes them to Hamunaptra. On the way there, they doesn't just get unwanted company of some stupid americans, they are allso attacked by some men in black clothes. These men only want to stop them from reaching Hamunaptra because they can't risk that anyone opens Imhoteps tomb.
But Rick and his companions do get to Hamunaptra, and they start searching for the tomb. They find it, and stupid as they are, they manage to wake the mummy. Very stupid! But as it is, they now need to stop Imhotep from destroying the world. But how?
This is a classical adventure film, and I like it. Very entertaining and even tough the effects are pretty bad, it's still a nice movie. Really my kind of film. Not a deep, dramatic story, but an exiting plot with living mummys, a lot of guns and action. Perfect for a friday night with some pop corn. A typical pop corn-picture.
When I first saw this movie, I saw it over and over again. I just loved it. Now I've seen it, maybe five times, and the tv-channels is showing it all the time. But I still like it.
