The Philadelphia Story

The Philadelphia Story

Three of Hollywoods biggest stars ever on the screen together! Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart! 1940. Director: George Cukor.

The high society girl Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) have divorced her former husband C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) two years ago, and now she's about to marry the working man George Kittredge (John Howard). The gossip magazine reporter Macaulay "Mike" Connor (James Stewart) and the photographer Liz (Ruth Hussey) are going to go to the wedding and write about it, pretending to be some relatives of Tracy's.

The person who came up with this idea is no other then Dexter Haven. Tracy finds out about it, and doesn't like it, but let the reporters stay, pretending as if she doesn't know anything, after that Dexter tells her that the reporters boss has damaging information about Tracy's father. Tracy doesn't want ruin her family's reputation, so she does as Dexter says.

Tracy feels torn between Dexter, Mike and George and after hearing evil words about herself she becomes sad and hurt. Confused she gets drunk for the second time in her life, the night before the wedding. She and Mike kiss, and then takes an innocent swim in her pool. Mike later comes back to the house, singing and carrying a drunk Tracy in his arms. George and Dexter doesn't like it, especially not George who becomes very angry.

How will the wedding turn out now? Will there even be a wedding?

This is a funny comedy from 1940. Katherine Hepburn had her comeback with this picture, and she's really marvelous in it! Great picture. Maybe it's not like comedys today, but some things are still funny. If you like comedys from the 40's, then there's no problem with this one.
